Upcoming Overnight and Weekend Road Closures – A1 northbound, A1 southbound and Great North Road, Chawston

What is happening?

 

We are writing to inform you about upcoming road closures and diversion routes around the Black Cat junction. These closures will take place from 9pm Tuesday 28 July to 5am Monday 10 August 2026.

 

We’ll be carrying out essential works at the Black Cat roundabout to support the new upgraded junction and surrounding structures. To ensure the safety of road users and our workforce, planned road closures will be in place. While these temporary measures may cause some inconvenience, they will allow us to complete important activity efficiently and safely.

 

Our teams will be progressing several key pieces of work, including:

 

  • installation of the central reserve at the Black Cat junction
  • moving the A1 onto a new alignment north of the Black Cat junction near the services.

 

These improvements are vital to support the long-term upgrades planned for the junction, helping to improve safety, reduce congestion, and create smoother journeys for all road users. Full details of the closure dates, times and exact locations can be found on the following pages.

 

Diversion Maps

 

To make our information easier to access and more environmentally friendly, all diversion maps will now be available online only. This change ensures that residents and businesses can view the most up to date route information at any time from their computer, tablet, or mobile device.
